MP2 Energy’s Electric Vehicle Free Charging Program - FAQs

Find answers to many of the most frequently asked questions regarding MP2’s Electric Vehicle Free Charging Program and EV ownership in general.

Will my electric bill increase when I buy an EV?

As you might expect, your electric bill has the potential to increse IF your usage increases.

Without an EV charging plan like MP2’s, it is possible that your bill could increase significantly when you add EV charging; however, our plan is designed to keep your bill economical by giving you free hours during which to charge your vehicle.

What is the contract length of MP2’s Electric Vehicle Free Charging Program?

Contracts are offered in different lengths on the website.

When are the free charging hours?

Free charging hours run from midnight to 3:00 a.m. each morning.

How do I take advantage of the free charging hours?

Your EV will need to be able to schedule charging to take advantage of the free hours, but most modern models come with this capability.

Is there a monthly fee/meter surcharge?

There is not a monthly fee or meter charge.

Is this a renewable electricity plan?

Yes. The electricity from this plan is backed by renewable resources. According to the EPA, "A Renewable Energy Certificate, or REC (pronounced: rěk), is a market-based instrument that represents the property rights to the environmental, social and other non-power attributes of renewable electricity generation. RECs are issued when one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity is generated and delivered to the electricity grid from a renewable energy resource."

What vehicles are eligible? What about hybrid vehicles?

All EVs are eligible, provided they are plug-in models. This includes:

  • all-electric vehicles (EVs), also known as battery electric vehicles (BEVs), such as the Nissan Leaf or any Tesla model; and
  • plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), such as the Ford Fusion Energi.
Do I need to have a second meter or sub-meter installed?

No.

What if I also charge my EV at work, a public charging station, a friend’s house, etc.?

The Electric Vehicle Free Charging Program only covers charging done at your home address, but any charging you do at your workplace, a public charging station, or elsewhere reduces your need to charge at home.

Does it matter if I have a Level 1 or Level 2 charger?

No, but during the free charging hours a Level 1 charger is estimated to provide between 10.5 and 19.5 miles of range, compared with 42 to 105 miles of range on a Level 2 charger, according to The California Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Project (CALeVIP). A Level 2 charger requires professional installation, whereas a Level 1 plugs directly into a standard 120-volt outlet.

What else can I use during the night to take advantage of free electricity?

Anything you can charge during the day, especially those that have the ability to be scheduled to charge, can be charged for free at night during the free charging window.
